The obvious? Character development and a good story. It has to work on an emotional level, connect with the audience, like the OT. Otherwise it's just pretty images on a screen.

TLDR: People watch Star Wars for different reason. Some just want action and lightsabers, others want something more.

It would be cool if it wasn't a handsome American, but a foreigner who didn't even speak English. That would've been much more interesting.

Daisy Johnson sounds like the name of a 60s comic book character, which it probably is. I have no attachment to the Daisy Johnson original character, but who I do have an attachment to is Skye!
