It is a crossover spin off, so yeah it has to tie into what's going on in the movie universe. It's not like it takes place in a far away galaxy like Guardians (a TV show I would totally watch). No it takes place on Earth with the Avengers who kinda works for Shield.

They could've at least had James Spader show up, at least in voice form! He is a TV actor first after all!
