I used to have a mid 80's Japanese Fender P-bass, and it played better and felt of a higher quality than any American P-bass I ever played.

The Korean made Strats feel cheaper, but the mexi-strats feel, sound and play better than some American Standard series Strats. I have owned all three, and regularly gigged with a Lake Placid Blue standard Strat made in Mexico. 

It’s interesting how cars are different from, for example, guitars, as far as how manufacturing costs are handled.
