Honestly, I feel like “Mrs.” should be dropped out of language altogether. Ms. & Mr., both of which do not denote martial status. Also Mx. for non gender conforming, if you like.

Emma Thompson is everything. That is all.

Much though I love Alan Rickman, it’s really Emma Thompson who carries that storyline—when she says “You made the life I lead foolish, too”, it just GUTS you. You get a sense that her entire worldview and sense of her life was upended by her dipshit husband, and your heart just breaks for her.

When she weeps and begs Marianne (Kate Winslet) not to die and leave her ... That's some acting. It's also beautifully shot from above. I love Ang Lee.

And then there’s the end of Sense and Sensibility. She’s a master weeper, and manages to never make it seem exploitative...

This movie is on the whole rather shitty but my parents love it so we watch it every year, and I will say that scene where Emma Thompson finds out her husband is cheating, briefly loses it, and then pulls it together for her kids is heartbreaking. She rises above the material.

I’m with you. I truly believe that Thompson’s scene in the bedroom is among the great pieces of acting ever put on film. Total heartbreak, immediate and devastating, survived.

Well sorta. I think that calling race a modern construction ignores a pretty universal process. America has its constructions, Europe another set and North Korea yet another. The difference between Croat and Serb is largely incomprehensible to most people, but in Yugocrazya it was a letter of life and death.

OK, best use of italics and repetition I’ve seem in 5 years — I snorted out loud each time I came to the phrase. Thanks for the laugh! :-)

I was listening to Dan Savage’s Lovecast recently, and a woman called in who is dating a guy who has his ex-wife’s name tattooed on his face.

There is a series of measurements taken of various parts of the skeleton. There is a range for males and females. These ranges overlap, but when there is no other defining trait to specify the sex the measurements are taken en toto and used to determine sex. I’m assuming what they mean here is that all of the

That was awesome.

It was that smile at the end.

*Hmmm...that artichoke dip from lunch is trying to make a back door escape.. let’s see... can I clench in such a way that it makes no noise....let’s...try....eennn....oops. Nope. Too much force, Jim. Don’t want another Six Flags burrito-bathroom-line situation on our hands do we. A quick

It’s certainly not my style and I would never wear it, but it is rather universally flattering. There are a lot of different body types posted in those pictures and while none of them look amazing in the dress, none of them look bad in it either. I would think being on TV, not looking bad is most of the battle.

There’s always time to police women! This guy had the best response ever.

Old people.

“and their viewers complain if they repeat outfits too frequently.”

I just asked my trans sister (after of course apologizing that I have to go to her for dumb questions like this, and also want to clarify that she is not an expert just because she’s trans but because she’s way more knowledgable about queer politics than myself), and she told me that while they’re in character, the

I ALSO love how she make that joke “Took her long enough,” and rather than slag her off, all the ladies tried to “politely” tell her she was out of line. “Say that to her face” - don’t mess with Adele, Jenny!

Exactly. I hate the trend of “pranks” that are really just like “lol, assault!” Blech.
