I'm not so sure it was him not being "good" at character creation, but more that the characters were a tool of the story and not necessarily the story itself.

Turning the handle engages and releases the lock pins but it does not lock the knob. The thing was unlocked the whole time.

Except its completely misleading and faked. That's not a gun safe, its your average office/hotel safe which is NOT required to maintain the same level of security as a gun safe. Secondly, is wasn't locked, and third the kid didn't open it by "joslting" it, he opened it by turning the knob and pulling it open.
