If you do up to the detective quest (which is like the 3rd or 4th main story quest) where you go to Fort Hanlan, you learn some stuff about Shaun, that makes it likely that the character would say “Oh well I need to get more information about the world.” and would most likely start really exploring.
Take the perk that lets you get more stuff from breaking down weapons. At level 1 it makes nearly every gun give screws.
