I know you're being hyperbolic for effect, but I don't think those dudes are the worst by any stretch. For over 2000 years Big 3 monotheism has been fucking our world up reeeeal good, so I'll take their smug know it all bullshit over that nonsense any day (I stated this just recently, but I think some perspective is

I mostly agree with you. I don't think it's really an either/or situation either. But I can't really get myself to care if someone's offended by someone criticizing their superstition. That said, I vehemently don't believe in discrimination of any kind regarding anyone. They have a right to believe what they want. I

Eh, If I have to choose between the smarmy smugness that comes with aggressive atheism or the people still hung up on superstitions and actively engaged in apocalyptic cults, I choose the nu-atheists (edit). I don't know if Maher's critique of Islam goes over to the side of phobia, or is much worse than his critique

Ah, yeah, I meant in my original reply that they do get most of their stuff from MGP, but that it was still really good (my first run-on sentence was unclear). I like that they don't try to hide that the source the majority of their whiskey. I had their white whiskey once, and it was a bit bizarre honestly, and unlike

It's true that many are sourced, and most aren't anything to write home about, I have to go to the plate for High West's stuff, which is almost uniformly wonderful mixes. Their double rye is a great, relatively inexpensive mix of aged and young ryes, which is fantastic.

They were never the most original of bands. I don't think that's necessarily a dig against them though, because they do what they do very well. I can't listen to this, because I'm a lame and I'm at work, but I can only assume I could play this in my head right now and enjoy it.

Awards shows in themselves are far more embarrassing and obnoxious than any sanctimonious platitudes espoused at said award shows.

Agreed on "Angel of Death;" the argument that it's some sort of ode to fascism and genocide is tired.

I don't think Basinki's project has ever been particularly interesting or revelatory personally. Like a lot ambient music, it's often beautiful but mostly vacant; and often Basinski's work seems more important than it actually is (as already alluded to in the review)… I've seen him live, as well, but he was dead

I need to check out Mob Rules.

Intensive Care is worth checking out from a couple of the members, but it's not PV. Instead it's a droney fucked up noise rock band. Good stuff.

All these mostly negative reviews I've read of this new one makes me want to to check it out. I haven't paid attention to Joan of Arc since The Gap I think ( whatever the The Jade Tree stuff was). But those first few records were relatively important to me when they came out, and they became a needed alternative from

I'm not interested a lick in this style of hardcore (if making me feel old and full of hatred for the youth is what they're going for, well, then they succeeded)… I've been out of the hardcore/ug punk stuff for a while now, but I would like to hear some recommendations of some good stuff happening in the underground

I agree about the misty-eyed Orientalism re: Vietnam. Embarrassing. It goes without saying, he doesn't know what it's like to be a native Vietnamese person (to be fair, how could he?), but his idea of what it is to be a traveler in these countries in SE Asia in particular is equally ridiculous. His writing on these

I don't agree, but I'm white. I also know Hue is Central. But whatevs.

Haiphong had some of the best crab soup (I forget the name right now) and that's North. I always dug the Pho and Bun Cha in Hanoi. I dunno. I was there for a year so I got to eat a bit. Some of the best clams I've ever eaten were in Hue fwiw.

Harsh noise walls—e.g. The Rita, early Sewer Election, and The Cherry Point—only really make sense to me when I'm feeling a soul deep nihilism. While I can't say this happens often (enough), when it does rear its non-self, HNW seems to best fit that hypnotic, no-time moment of staring into the grand effigy of reality.

Fair enough! No more hate, people!

What if you've seen a lot of her other films and still thinks she's a milquetoast bleh-machine? I don't know what's more boring, her performances or this near constant attempt to harangue people into thinking she's this hidden gem. Let people hate, people!
