just looked over at flyertalk . com and I learned you need the mobile boarding pass first on the NEW Untied app then you can 'add to passbook'. I'll get my mobile pass on Sunday and can try it.... not sure if passbook really is a time saver for me.

I booked mine on United.com... so me thinks that isn't the problem.
