I actually thought the two Sonic movies particularly the second one had a lot of references to the original Mega Drive games. They didnt have any post Sonic 3 references though so may feel a bit basic to those that grew up on Sonic Adventures.

I really loved the show, maintained the mystery with four main suspects in various potential pairs with evidence pointing to and against each of them and gave the audience enough clues to solve it on their own without relying on withholding key evidence from the audience or last-minute introduction.
