The argument about not being able to pay if there's no cell service reads very much like the authors are expecting this to be all or nothing.
If, like me, you like to photograph your handwritten notes and upload to a note tool such as Evernote so that you have them to hand on your mobile device, make sure your cell provider doesn't have image compression.

I unlocked my iPhone 3G so that I could use it abroad without incurring ridiculously high roaming charges and also so that I could have my calendar appointments on my lock screen.
@Vanilla-Terror: Imagine there's a can of beer across the other side of the room. To get the beer out, you get yourself a big long metal straw and puncture the side of the can with it. Then the straw comes out.
