This is VERY common here in FL both for nefarious and accidental reasons.

If this were Minnesota or Wisconsin, we’d just assume those were all just dummies who tried ice fishing a bit too early or late in the season and were too embarrassed to admit what really happened to their vehicles (because there’s a fine involved).

So uhh, how would they implement this? My BMW is almost 30 years old and is OBDI, with not even a hint of Canbus. It’s got a cable throttle, no stability control, and it doesn’t even have ABS. Even in more modern cars it seems like a logistical nightmare to implement.

To me, there are three steps that really need to be done to fix this, and none of them are governors.

Not only that, apparently he ran the plate and it came back as invalid, not stolen.

From what I recall in another article, he ran the plate and it didn’t even come up as stolen, it came up as invalid, likely because the states use a different numbering format.  So it comes up as invalid and he jumps to the “it must be stolen” mode.

Yep, when someone terrorizes you due to their own incompetence and they have the legal authority to kill you and your entire family with consequences (if any) to happen later, best put a smile on your face and say, “THANK YOU SIR! Can I have another?!”

The incident is still under review, according to a statement released by Frisco Police Department’s public information officer, adding that “any discipline related to it has yet to be determined.”

Someone with a gun and the authority to seemingly pull people over for anything shouldn’t be ‘making mistakes’. I hope the family sues.
