Fun article, but the Trekkie in me has to point out the Original Series was not nearly as “utopian” as TNG and as for the Vulcans generally being pretty much all right prior to Solok, let’s not forget that Spock’s fiancee plotted to have him killed just to get out of an arranged marriage (in the very first ST episode

Sorry, but B5 was absolutely not better than DS9.

FYI, Jake Sisko is Kenny Lofton’s nephew. Yes that Kenny Lofton.

“Worf, who is apparently a proto-Barry Bonds, tries to draw a walk, but Odo—this is Deep Space Nine’s security chief, who is umpiring the game because he has a colossal boner for law and order—calls the fourth ball a strike.”

Just for the record, a holosuite:

“The ‘hero’ learns nothing and comes back from it absolutely unchanged” is a real weird read of a scene where Sisko starts letting go of his grief and anger at his wife’s death because of Prophets, but hey, whatever flavors your haterade!

DS9 is my jam and this episode was just so fun....

“The central conflict of Star Trek is between the utopian boner of the sunny optimist who created this universe and the more cynical and suspicious motives of the people who followed him in populating and sustaining it.”

Gene’s motives in creating TOS were as cynical as anyone else’s. But somewhere in the 70s, he began

It’s holosuite.

No, we saw the episode on the front line.

I love this episode. It is immensely silly (especially taking place during the middle of a war) but a load of fun. Great subversion of sports movies too. In almost every sports movie, the scrappy underdogs manage to beat the team with all the advantages because they have more heart and spirit. The DS9 crew gets crushed

Now playing

DS9 is definitely the best Trek series. You can’t convince me otherwise.

“In the future, there is just one baseball, and it sits on Commander Ben Sisko’s desk.”

“Worf, who is apparently a proto-Barry Bonds”

“I want to hear some chatter out there!”

“DEATH TO THE ENEMY!”

Or considerably more questionable given that pretending someone half your age is your equal is textbook grooming, predatory behavior.

I caught the film at the Berlin Film Festival and had much of the same reaction. Everyone was falling all over the film and the filmmaker. I was kinda like “meh” art house gay film for straight people. Beautifully shot but that is what Guadagnino is very good at.
