I used to love the way Renault and Ferrari Turbo engines from the late 70s early 80s sounded, more so than all the howling of the high rev N/As. I don't think anything is wrong with how this Mercedes engine sounds plus you're hearing it from onboard.

That would be why RX7 aftermarket exhausts were always noticeably more expensive than any other comparable car. They were made of materials or built in a way to withstand far more heat then your average car's exhaust.
