"mysterious"? More like fairly obvious to anyone who has ever brewed beer or made wine. We call them bottle bombs and they happen when there's too much left over fermentable sugar. The yeast eats it and then produces C02, too much and the bottle becomes over pressurized. Boom. So either somebody bottled them too soon…
