I saw a couple of those too.
AWFUL!

I actually saw a couple of these episodes when they aired.
The shows themselves could've worked, but in the early 70s - not the late 70s.
The popularity of the variety show was facing a downward swing due to a "glut" of variety shows, there were just too many of them and people were rapidly getting tired of them.

Well, according to Raw Story there is an article that says he has withdrawn his nomination.

Interesting note:
I had never heard of Wilkin's Coffee before this, but a little research tells me they were in business for 33 Years and 8 months and was centered in Maryland. The company dissolved in June 1983.
However the Muppets are still around so they have outlived Wilkin's coffee.

As to your first question…
It started when their ratings went up because of it. Trump's rants got people interested in what got him so "ticked off" so people are watching to see what's going to happen next.

Remember when they came back 33 years ago, the top dollar amount for Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy were $500 and $1,000 respectively. Now they are $1,000 and $2,000 for each respective round.
Has the earlier amounts been adjusted for the change?
