They were more likely to have other problems with piston rings and cylinder walls when a lot of boost was thrown at them. Some early ring problems were even appearing on stock

Depends on the exhaust routing. It did make Subarus have a unique sound, as do Mustangs, various GM products and Honda starter motors.
