Seems to me the paper trail (either through actual bank statements or written communication) was probably uncovered in the Cohen raids. Trump and his team know that it will get out eventually. Might as well send this chump on a friendly media outlet to cushion the blow a bit, and try to control the narrative.

My thoughts exactly. We’ll never get Trump himself admitting he lied, but sending one of his lackeys (Giuliani) on Fox News and spinning a different version of the lie that is slightly more compatible with the facts that have been revealed is about the best they could do in this case.
