The acceptance speeches were generally good, too— self aware, reflective, focused on important stuff.

I thought so too. If nothing else, the opening bit, Glory and Lady Gaga made the whole thing watchable. Oh, and Tegan and Sara, though I didn't see the Lego movie, so I felt like I wasn't fully getting it.

I think it came down to a few things but namely that, in the top line categories (Actor/Actress, Director, Film), there really wasn't any suspense.
