A word of warning (from someone who found out the hard way) - some HDs contain platters that are made of glass. Before hitting them with a hammer, check they're metal, not glass. Better still, do it outside instead of on the living room carpet.

Nice job, although I prefer the route of an actual nice-looking HTPC case.

I dunno what all the fuss is about? I'm running OS4 on my 3G iPhone and it is the same as before. The following might be important details...

A "REAL" wrench for the lug-nuts. Most garages put the things on really tight, and the wrench that comes with the car is usually less than 12" long and doesn't have enough leverage to remove them (especially with winter salt crusted on them). Having been stuck once in the embarrassing situation of having to call AAA

@Stephen J Nims: Hmmm... not really ice cream, if the only ingredient is milk. At least some eggs, flour, pinch of salt, and heavy cream should be added.

This is one of those situations where having a smartphone really helps. This page...

Nice use of the space. We have a similar dilemma in our house - a 10x10 room for use as an office, guest room, storage etc., plus my closet is in there. Its one of those situations where you're really glad they invented the fold-away sofa!

$200 for an 80GB SSD is not that bad! I'm lucky (?) enough to have a 1.8" PATA drive in my compact laptop (the same size drive as used in the MacBook Air), and there's really only one manufacturer (MTron) that makes a fast SSD in that size. Cost was $240+ for 32GB about a year ago, and hasn't gone down since then.

@longbourne: Agreed - no matter hoow many reminders I set on my iPhone and desktop calendar, I still end up missing some appointments because I didn't hear/see the alarm. Digital stuff just disappears.

NO WAY IN HELL am I handing over log in details to my brokerage account, to a site with a big "in beta" tag on the top corner of the screen.

@31337h4ck3r: You are not alone. NYT Sunday Magazine had a feature on this a while ago...

@prupert: Get SLC not MLC - longer life with continuous writes. Also there are some common tweaks such as moving caches, and disabling defrag, all here...

@lorensingley: slightly NSFW due to the page heading showing up at the top of the browser window.

@danger the pirate: 100% agree. Even an ultraportable PC running Win7 and with 3GB of RAM will run you less than $700. I just cannot fathom why anyone would want to drop twice that on a Mac that does the same or less. Then factor in the relatively high failure rate, and the cost of AppleCare (an absolute must), and

@Gotlactose: If they have a netbook running windows, maybe the Kindle or B&N reader app's might be worth a shot? Both are free downloads IIRC.

@hewhoroams: I assume your iPhone is jailbroken? If not, you can't just swap out the AT&T SIM for a 3rd party one.

Ooooh a Leica D-Lux-4 in the picture up top (well, the panny equivalent). Nice choice! (jealous D-Lux-3 owner here).

@battra92: I think it really depends on how much of a given product you use. We use roughly 1 bottle of dish detergent every 3 months - I really can't fathom that saving 20c every 3 months by switching to a cheaper brand is going to make a difference. On the other hand there are breakfast cereals... the store brand
