The seasons and/or location of vehicle changing would affect the times greatly, rendering the time of day method inaccurate. Although, you could connect the system to a cell phone for GPS, date, and time zone.

For the second option, the track could run all the way around the top of the car, and have a couple extra telescoping discs so you could block the sun in the backseat and on the sides as well!
