There are some interesting groups from that period lost in the sands of time. The Moodists being one such gem. Great, lurching bass lines over Dave Graney's idiosyncratic vocal style.

Comsat Angels! Don't hear them mentioned much these days. They had some great songs.

If you read My Dark Places or watch the documentary about the book, you'll see what I mean. I wasn't picking up much of an empathy vibe for the fact that this was his mother.

Not quite sure why a personal attack was warranted but that's de rigueur for A.V Club. When people make a comparison like that I think it applies more to the detractor rather than the insulted.

I'm intrigued to see what their new sound will be after 8 years. I file them under my dark moods file - The Dirty Three, GSYBE, 16 Horsepower, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Scott Walker, etc.

Anyone a fan of the group I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness? They have a new album coming out next month after an 8 year break. Their video clip for "The Owl" is still one of my favorites for atmospheric, dark rock - http://www.youtube.com/watc…

That first album really was great. I feel like their sonic palette stagnated over the years though. The Ian Curtis-isms were novel at first but they never seemed to transcend their influences. Hopefully the new album is a return to form.

I saw them at the Metro in Sydney about 10 years ago and it felt like a trip to a German dentist's office. Procedural, efficient, and with very little banter between proceedings.

Ellroy spent a lengthy part of his life as an itinerant drug user. Despite getting his life back together after his first novel, I think there is still part of him that comes across as not-quite-all-there in photos.

Not sure why Utopia needs a remake in the first place. If Fincher makes a completely different show in terms of aesthetic and tone I'd probably be interested. I hope it's not a cut & paste for a U.S. audience.

If anyone can make Utopia work in a U.S. context, Fincher can. However, I'm fairly certain it will need to be a completely different aesthetic to succeed on its own terms. The colour grading, actors and offbeat music of the UK version is just about perfect.

It's a re-purpose of his character's snarky remark about the SF Chronicle being a provincial rag in the Zodiac movie.

"….the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel
and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
and a dark wind blows
the government is corrupt
and we're on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn…."

Laaa….laaa….laaa….laaa.

"Keithy's done himself a mischief" - one of my favourite lines in any film.

They're watching St. Kilda play if I remember correctly so it's AFL (aussie rules football) - rugby is a different game.

As a younger man I thought Bob was singing "I don't care about Jews." Which I found to be a jarring non sequitur.

No, he married his cat.

Yeah, because this is by far the meanest thing that's ever been written on the A.V. Club.
