I think that’s because, with the exception of a couple communities that had been “hijacked” for spam and shitposting, all the communities were tied into specific games. So... you’d go there to chat about those games, share your playing experiences, creative works, etc.

Honestly, it seems like the whole of Shibuya just has its own sort of distinct culture that runs completely counter to the rest of Japan, and that seems to extend even to things like cleanliness. In many respects, Shibuya’s counterculture is actually great. This is not one of them.

It does seem at odds with their very polite and respectful nature. To be fair Shibuya does feel a bit more chaotic than other parts and a wonderful place to visit just for the atmosphere.
