Some games have contractual obligations that correlate to Metacritic. And yes - a publisher will choose to fund or not fund you based on past metacritic scores. Metacritic is part of a developers resume. Sad - but true.

There's a massive disconnect between game developers and the customer. It is hilarious watching threads of people discussing your work and pretending to know how your code works.
