This was a game we played in a Philadelphia collar county in the ‘90s, though it didn’t have a name. But with some different connotations and expectations, which I think pretty radically changes what the game was actually doing.

I played it in elementary school in the early-mid ‘90s. It’s not new, it’s probably just hyper-local because it’s not even a game we had a name for. Like, experiences of it probably differ from one school to the next even in the same district or town.
