Early prototypes of the iron man suit couldn’t generate enough thrust from the boot-jets alone so it augmented them with a taint-jet.

I’d imagine that since it’s made of many segmented parts, if it failed catastrophically it would just splinter into a bunch of small debris. No more dangerous (perhaps less) than the thousands of other components of a city/marina that can turn ballistic in a hurricane.
