This is so incredibly ignorant. Plenty of software companies release older versions of their IP under freeware licenses. You do not lose a claim to the IP, just because you offer a freeware version.
> Exactly, you aren’t. You are someone who wants to play for free and are sad that the free server got shut down.
250,000 signatures does not equate to 250,000 interested people. As others have said, it is sadly quite difficult to get people to sign a petition.
You can see how much flack I’ve gotten. It’s rather absurd.
If it would not be cost effective, then offer the DBC, map files, etc as freeware. Make everyone happy. OR hire the Nostalrius team. Seriously, people have done all this for free. Blizzard could just demand access to the material that others have created for various expansions.
Then explain how Nostalrius alone had 150,000 active accounts and explain why Nostalrius and other free to play private servers are in any way a threat to Activision/Blizzard.
> And they got got because copyright law is copyright law.
What are you trying to imply?
> It is not all of Blizzard that said this, right?
What?
> I hate the idea of Legacy Servers. No matter what, it’s going to detract from the live version of the game.
I just can’t believe that a representative for a company got away with saying that without being fired.
Blizzard is profit gouging, at the very least. Kotaku is busy making excuses for them.
I’m not really a player anyway, so I’m not being ignored. But many are. And if you want to argue that it’s a trivial amount, what is Blizzard losing by allowing people to run legacy servers?
> Notice the word Limited in there. A Private Server is not limited use, a Private Server uses all Blizzards copy written material to simply exist.
> People are afraid of them because it takes resources away from new content instead of keeping stuff people did to death back in the day up and going.
> While I agree with you, understand that American IP law is stupid and if you fail to protect your intellectual property it can be stripped from you and you lose the legal right to pursue action against further infringement.
Sarcasm is difficult to identify online. If you’re serious then I kind f get ya. I’ve only played a handful of times, if you’re implying that I am being selfish. Don’t judge others by your own character.
So you are saying that the number of people who are or want to play legacy is inconsequential?
