Oh my god. It is 100% relevant to teach about the religions that have shaped the world. It is social science. It is not indoctrination to just learn about something - about its characteristics and existence.

You do not teach religion in schools. Point. Period. Blank.

This seems like a classic example of a diaspora being stuck in a time-warp - i.e. the 'motherland' moves on progressively with it's value system while the values of the diaspora remains stagnant, in an attempt to hold on to their 'culture'.
