To paraphriase Jay Leno "we would save our natural resources by going Havana 'Yank Tank' and keeping our old cars running." And if we used the technological advances to reduce emissions and maybe replace/upgrade the engines in the oldies we'd all benefit at reduced cost.
The way cars are moving technologically, all new cars in the future will be appliances. Isolate the occupants from the driving. In car wi-fi, automated cars, god knows what will be next.

I'd go for it. Worst comes to worst, you can always swap in a complete modern driveline. LS1, V6 from a Camaro, Challenger or Musting will put out lots of go power.
