You are correct in that they’re using “disappearing” as a transitive verb. What makes it more cute is that “disappearing” as a transitive verb is usually used to describe the process of making people disappear, as when the Argentine government secretly tortured and murdered people during the Dirty War.

Just because some of you have’t seen the usage of “disappeared” as it’s used in the headline before doesn’t mean it’s not correct.
