Yes, not scripted, but I think the castaways are massaged (or groomed, if you like) to reach certain conclusions and behave in desired ways. I would not be surprised that Varner's handler, when chatting with him about his strategy for TC, may have asked him "What do you mean 'deception'?" and listened to Varner go off…
