Having read the book and watched Kubrick's version, though not the other, I think the restrictions ultimately worked in favour of the movie. By having the focus on Mason/Humbert we had one of the finest performance in cinema.

Having read the reviews of Jem, it's failure, I think, is in trying to pander to 15 year old girls, rather than appealing to the nostalgia of 80's and 90's kids.
