I think the whole point is “We searched for the fastest, here SHE goes”. Putting in one sentence all the women can’t be race car drivers to rest and simply treating her as a driver, the fastest one.

I think it’s more likely they sounded defensive because they know the internet will bitch and moan and look at her racing career on wikipedia and compare it with their own favourite who is miles faster and should’ve got the job.
