It’s not that radioactive dirt/dust is especially harmful to your hands, it’s that you’re at risk of tracking it home and having it sit around your house, irradiating you, or potentially inhaling some if it, which is even worse for long term exposure.

I guess just by virtue of being a particularly emotionally level and mellow type generally, I never got sucked up into real obsessiveness or protective manias, and I’m still a little skeptical that something as contextually abstract as this film sounds (no proper nouns or real personalizing backstory) would grip me…

Perhaps it’s less that he needs them for sustenance than that he derives enjoyment from eating them, and has built up a dependency over the years. I agree that it would be for the right sort of viewer (and most rom-com fans would probably not be), but I enjoyed it thoroughly having been briefed only that it “ended very dark”.

The convention would be that the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union gets capitalized, but the broader concept of a cold war, like between you and your annoying neighbor, is not.
