I think the answer to "WHY?" is that they wanted their baby to be a part of their ceremony. They found a super awkward way of accomplishing that but the motivation is pretty clear, I think.

I was just thinking how much I'd love to talk religion with Prince (I mean, come on, how exactly the JW side of his personality meshes with the, well, Prince side has got to be fascinating) and then I realized: it must suck to be the *other* person going door-to-door with Prince.
