“she’s like every other girl in the world and that she uses men to get money, and at least he’s a hard-working man and that he works for his money.”
eta: I would posit that this cover and the shoot within are a downright love letter to their friend Linda and if anyone would prefer a respectful take on this please visit the ladies at go fug yourself:
Oh Audra, you didn’t read the interview did you?
You think it’s ethical for a website/news outlet to pay bribe money for unretouched photos of a woman that she doesn’t consent to having released? Uh, okay, great...
I see your point, there is some hypocrisy in the photo/ caption on the cover. But what’s more important is that Linda 1 didn’t want to be photographed ‘as she is’ and 2 wouldn’t have agreed to do the cover ‘as she is’. She’s a person with feelings. She isn’t here to be your ‘living embodiment’.
The author’s insta is highly curated and selective and definitely poses herself as aspirational. So...where are those warts, Audra? Or are you also a, “living embodiment of all that women and femmes put themselves through to attain an cruel, expensive, and outdated beauty ideal?" Hm? Personally I find that sentence…
How much are you guys offering for the un-retouched photos this time?
The author was deprived of her inspiration porn!
So you’re “enraged” that the magazine didn’t overrule her wishes and force her to take the photos showing what she calls her “deformity” as though it was some fucking Elephant Man-esque “expose” to serve as a prop for your agenda...
This title, jeez.
People like the author of this piece don’t understand what fiction is.
If the title of this article was “Hulu’s ‘Not Okay’ Shows Us Everything That’s Not OK With Black Women”, everyone would be apoplectic.
She wants the movie to be true, so she can use it as proof that white women are evil.
If she cares so much about that, shouldn’t she move away and give the land back?
You’re a professional victim presumably, that makes it easy for you to read subtext that supports your own worldview of how awful white people are.
“White women are awful. White women are shallow. White women constantly do evil things to WOCs. Have I mentioned my hate for white women because they’re white? Social media lies and scamming would only be done by white women because they’re white women and rotten to the core.”
They are absolutely tripping over themselves to be both victim and oppressor.
It almost feels like from reading this piece, that the writer has forgotten that it was a scripted movie, not a real life person or sequence of events.
Googled author’s name. First hit was her personal website. This is the first line of her bio:
Read this whole vapid opinion piece seeking the possible relevance of the race of the character. Left disappointed. 0/10 would not read your by-line again, Ms/Mr. Banting.
