No, not really. That’s a culturally sanctioned event that the city condones and even encourages, with infrastructure in place to clean up afterwards, with economic benefits to the city. The equivalent would be a bunch of Japanese people holding a rave on your commuter bus.
I don’t think they were protesting the concept of Halloween as much as they were protesting the antisocial and disrespectful behaviour of the foreigners. Which, fair enough - it’s extremely rude and obnoxious to take over a public space, make it unusable for everyone else, and then leave a mess behind for others to…
I fucking loved that swan dress and I still don’t understand why people go on about it as an example of terrible dresses. It was cute and funny and wacky in an enjoyable way. I like that she didn’t take herself or the fanciness of the event too seriously. Team Bjork all the way
TBH I imagine that there are so many little Harvey Weinsteins at every level of the industry that people start to take it for granted that this is the way it is, what’s the point of reporting it to police. It’s not just one guy, it’s the entire system.
I mean, there are disabilities, and there are disabilities. I know many happy adult children of parents with disabilities who were not carers. But in my case, I don’t think that I could function sufficiently to be a good parent. It’s such a huge responsibility, I wish people would think a bit harder sometimes about…
you were in the room?
This dynamic is something I had in mind when I decided not to have kids. Though in some ways I want them, I have multiple disabilities, including mental health issues and a lifelong developmental disorder. I feel like in these circumstances, if I had a child I would just be breeding up a carer.
I don’t know if you guys are aware of this, but in the UK he actually has an ongoing deal advertising BT phone and broadband. An example of the genre:
What, Sirens are little sparrows with people faces, I don’t know where this mermaid has come from
I think it’s a cultural thing - Jewish weddings have kids coming out the wazoo, but I’ve noticed a lot of Christian ones seem to be adults-only except for bridesmaids. So it just depends on what your folk expect
I deliberately used UK (channel islands are not part of the UK). But in any case, a couple of small islands are not enough to change the national consciousness, and even bombing is not the same. You can’t compare that to countries like Poland or Hungary where your family or neighbours were taken out and shot or put on…
I don’t know, I think mostly the UK is able to treat the subject with levity/as a subject of farce because they were never occupied, and never experienced first-hand the horrors of the regime.
It was a group costume - two were dressed as French Resistence, two as Germans
I think it’s a sign he just went to a costume shop and asked for a Nazi uniform, rather than lovingly handcrafting a screen-accurate ‘Allo ‘Allo version.
God, America is weird.
I don’t think she was being serious. She was making fun of the people who do nothing and “spread love” by meaningless acts like buying cake.
Shrimp behind a radiator, surely?
God this still sounds like every student I went to high school/college with.
