A few years back there were wildfires in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. The long-term weather forecast was for a dry, hot day with high winds in five days - the kind of weather firefighters dread when they aren’t battling an out of control fire in dense bush in mountains.

People are terrible. They don’t understand about bears, and their negligence gets a bear killed. (TIE YOUR FOOD UP.) They don’t understand about fires, and their negligence burns down a forest. (DROWN YOUR FIRE.)

Agreed. With this camp fire, we poured all the water on it, and thought it was out. Like, really out. But another person we were camping with woke up really early before anyone else and saw the smoldering and took care of it, thankfully.

It’s really fascinating. None of it is satirical that I can see—a straight up rendering of literal stories of Genesis. We bought a copy of the book and I’m looking forward to reading it.

I’m a 5th generation native Californian, and I’ve seen my share of drought/fire/rains/floods/mudslides cycles. It breaks my heart every single time, but this year feels particularly bad. It’s tragic for those who lose homes and businesses, and the double tragedy is that it will take the land a loooong time to recover.
