Mario's world, with it's focus on turtles and mushrooms, was probably inspired by Wonderland.

I could see her make a sincere advance and then Richard turning her down out of loyalty to Jimmy… but you never know.

I wish that "The Man Who Laughs" an old silent movie about a man who has a similar problem to Richards had come out just a little earlier.  Unfortunately it came out in 1928, but I'd love to see Richard's reaction to it.
