People who think they know a lot about cars but really don't know much of anything about cars can be surprisingly inept, and are surprisingly numerous among my generation (I'm a sophomore in college). Personally, I would have opted for taking CA-1 (PCH) the whole way up from Santa Barbara. Great views, great road, and a ton of photo opportunities. A bit longer, but completely worth it IMO.

2004 Subaru Outback H6 LLBean: Owned by my family since new, belonged to me for a couple years, and now belongs to my brother. 135,000 miles currently. Will keep forever, as far as I'm concerned. Will inevitably be modified, and will be around for quite awhile.
