Exterior-wise the current one is aging, but interior-wise I would not say in any way that it feels like you're driving it as a favor.

I think Volvo should jump back into the AWD sporty wagon game. It's a sector currently inhabited by nobody, and I think it could be immensely successful. Audi's cut all their awesome wagons, BMW lacks a 3-series wagon in the US, Subaru has no LGT wagon, Mazda might not bring their 6 wagon over... Why not go for it??
