I had something similar happen to a jetta I had. Trunk worked just fine, didn’t have any issues with it. Got a flat on the way to work one day so I hit the trunk release. Nothing. Pull it again. Nothing. Get out and use the key. I hear the mechanism working, but it doesn’t open. Turn key again and pull on it. Nothing.
