Yeah, that breastplate looks a lot more realistic. I'll allow that some of the characters would choose pretty armor over survivability because reasons. I'll also allow that the girl in the pink armor totally got what was coming to her with her poor lance form.

I'd prefer my JRPGs to just not have random encounters at all. The option to turn them off is usually no option because the game is designed with grinding on random encounters in mind.
If I remember correctly, the reason I've never finished FFX-2 (despite finishing FFX and FFXII), was the requirement to complete all the mini-games to get the "best ending". I got stuck on something in the lightning bolt area and just lost all interest from there.
