i went through 3 local ones and ended up back at the one that did the install. None of them would do what I asked though.

Yea dealerships make all the difference. Unfortunately there's bad ones for every car maker.

That's odd. I always found the Mazda 6 infotainment terrible to begin with and wouldn't recommend getting in. The system in the 3 is much better.
