I once hiked a Civil War park and unfortunately got lost. I ended up so dehydrated all I could do was crawl desperately looking for help and water. Eventually, a nice park ranger helped me, but I guess the rest of these assholes thought I was a ghost...

You still have to translate them to visual medium and edit out all the dumb bits about soup or whatever tangent GRRM wrote. They did a brilliant job streamlining the three tomes the first four seasons were based on. The show starts going downhill when they adapt book four and five which suck.

It speaks to a cycle of abuse. The reason these coaches probably looked the other way because they were victimized by that growing up. Coming down on these kids for inflicting the same victimization that the coaches experienced would cause them to process their trauma.
