I had similar questions. Not sure you can leave the state, and definitely sure you can't work on your own case you're standing trial for. It also makes sense why all the scientists and world leaders would kill themselves without just blowing up the world. If they know they're being studied for weaknesses, they can kill themselves to stop the attack while letting the rest of the simulated "regulars" continue to live for as long as possible.
