I think part of why it works is the same sort of reason why Galaxy Quest works— it's satirizing the tropes, but it never plays it like the characters are in on the jokes. It's funnier by not going over the top.

Zamata, I think, has the undervalued strength of being one of the better all-around actors in the cast right now. Which isn't flashy, but works well for sketches that need someone to play straight. Or, in the White Oscars sketch— she and Michael Che could have been REALLY over the top in their Thurgood Marshall…
