I think the fans who get their dander up about this sort of thing underestimate what sort of percentage of the total fandom they represent. I think there is a very large portion of Trek fans who haven't even heard of Axanar, let alone have a dog in the fight.
Back in August CBS made a public statement of not endorsing it and that they were deciding what steps to take.
Renegades, during production, gave themselves a bit of cover by claiming they were make a spec pilot for CBS. That might have been pure sophistry, but it worked well enough.
Is the Axanar production company a 501(c)? There's a world of difference between "being a non-profit" and "not making a profit".
