The mistake is thinking the treadmill would keep the plane stationary. It wouldn’t. The plane would move forward (and generate lift), because the power isn’t being applied through the wheels. It Is being applied by pushing the air that is unconnected to the ground.

The point is that the plane will be moving- the article explains how the plane’s wheels are not connected to the engines at all. The plan will be accelerating at the same rate as usual, but the wheels will be spinning twice as fast.
