I tend to take you less seriously when you don’t know the difference between the Hyperloop concept (traveling in a sealed vacuum tube in a capsule at amazing speed) and a tunnel for cars.

No, they are torts. A crime is something you get arrested for. A tort is something you get sued over.

Libel is a tort, not a crime. The government won’t arrest you over it, and it’s not something you spend a day in jail for. If however Pete wanted to sue in civil court, he’d have a case (but it still wouldn’t be a sure thing, because it’s unlikely he’s suffered any damages.)

Lying about public officials isn’t a crime. However, I think Pete would have a strong case for a lawsuit.
