There's actually less variables in flying a plane. What traffic there is, is spread out over 3d space, and there's lots of open space, and no pedestrians. The iPhone 4, if you recall, came out in 2010. That had a 5mp camera. That puts the M8 squarely between the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 in terms of megapixels. Now I know megapixels aren't everything - but the M8 with it's ultrapixel camera had a habit of not being good in low light at all !
